Progress Report – Month Four

January 24, 2013 by Daniel

I’ll be totally honest and say that I only finished a single thing this month. I actually don’t feel too bad about this for two reasons: 1) Because I did last month’s Progress Report pretty late, this “month” was really only about two weeks, and 2) I actually spent the rest of the time being pretty productive, what with my new semester being more time-consuming than I would have expected, researching options for my future, and a whole whack of shows with my bands, and therefore a bunch of rehearsals. Luckily, there are a few things that I missed last month, so I’ve still got some stuff to write about. As always, scroll to the bottom for stats and stuff. Also, there have been a few very small changes to the lists, on account of getting rid of the things that I said I was going to drop.

Books

Midnight’s Children
The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid – In progress
Memoirs Found in a Bathtub
Hangover Square
Hip Hop America
Summerland
Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road
Revelations
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
The Canon
Moon
Redemption Song: The Ballad of Joe Strummer
Freedom
Catching Fire – I read this MONTHS AGO, as well as Mockingjay, the final book in the trilogy, and every time I’ve done a progress report I’ve simply forgotten about it. Anyways, I was so grabbed by the damn thing that I read it all in a day, and then immediately went to my library to take out Mockingjay. This is one of the rare moments where the books get better as they go on – Catching Fire is substantially more complicated, interesting, and personal than The Hunger Games, and Mockingjay even moreso. It’s a hell of a trilogy, and very much worth checking out if you haven’t joined the zeitgeist yet.

Moonface – With Sinaii: Heartbreaking Bravery – After a few listens, I’ve grown to really like this album – weirdly, for many of the same reasons as I liked that Shearwater album. They’re actually kind of eerily similar, considering that I listened to them around the same time. More on this soon.

Movies

This has gotten to be really problematic. The way this final semester has turned out is with me watching three movies a week – only one of which is on this list. So, this is basically me saying that it’s very likely that, other than Let The Right One In, which I’ll be watching for class this weekend, don’t expect any more progress on this for another three months or so. Sorry.

Stats and Stuff

This month, I read one book (though really it’s from a while ago BUT WHO’S COUNTING?!), listened to four albums, and played through one video game. So, not the greatest month, but I think I validated it relatively well.

Let’s check out the totals!

Books – 2/22 = 9%
Music – 21/50 = 42%
Video Games – 14/59 = 24%
Comics – 5/70 = 7%
Movies – 1/42 = 2%
TV – 2/19 = 10%

Check back in a few days for a piece about horror games and Dead Space.
